Rua (Clann Zú album)

Rua is the first full length album by Irish-Australian band Clann Zú. The album contains themes of resistance and desperation. The songs are sung mainly in English, though there is some use of Irish. The production gives the songs a heavily layered sound, with prominent use of violin tracks and Declan de Barra's emotive voice.

There is a video for the track "Five Thousand More" on the CD.

Reception

Stewart Mason of AllMusic reviewed Clann Zú's second album, Black Coats & Bandages (2004): he described Rua as a " head-spinning debut" and that both albums were "close to impossible to sum up in an easy sentence, because there are so many comparisons."Sputnikmusic's Tyler Munro summarised his review of Rua: the group "blurs the line between celtic/folk, indie rock and elecrtonica almost flawlessly to create a unique, organic listening experience." Adam White of Punknews.org felt it was "a wonderfully original and inspired album" showing "an eclectic mix of styles, with a rhythm section firmly rooted in electronica, instrumentation from Irish folk music and dark melodies that call to mind Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds."

Rua (band)

Rua was a band based in Christchurch, New Zealand for more than 20 years. Their musical style was Celtic fusion, with a range of traditional and original compositions in their repertoire.

Rua performed their farewell concerts at Lyttelton in December 2001

Augusta

Augusta is the feminine form of Augustus in Latin. It is used in many European languages as a feminine given name.

The Roman Empire included the honorific Augusta in the name of many colonies and provincial capitals, at first after the Emperor Augustus and then after the Roman title augustus borne by (senior) emperors. These many cities were then distinguished, usually by appending the name of the people people nearby.

Augusta is the capital of the U.S. state of Maine and the county seat of Kennebec County.

The city's population was 19,136 at the 2010 census, making it the third-smallest state capital (after Montpelier, Vermont and Pierre, South Dakota) and the ninth-largest city in Maine. Located on the Kennebec River at the head of tide, Augusta is home to the University of Maine at Augusta. Augusta is also the principal city in the Augusta-Waterville, ME Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area was first explored by the ill-fated Popham Colony in September 1607. It was first inhabited by English settlers from the Plymouth Colony in 1629 as a trading post on the Kennebec River. The settlement was known by its Indian name—Cushnoc (or Coussinoc or Koussinoc), meaning "head of tide." Fur trading was at first profitable, but with Indian uprisings and declining revenues, the Plymouth Colony sold the Kennebec Patent in 1661. Cushnoc would remain unoccupied for the next 75 years. This area was inhabited by the Canibas Indians. During the 17th century they were on friendly terms with the English settlers in the region.

Augusta AVA

The Augusta AVA was the first federally approved American Viticultural Area gaining the status on June 20, 1980, eight months before the Napa Valley AVA in northern California. Located entirely within the state of Missouri, the boundaries of this wine region encompass 15 square miles (39 km²) around the city of Augusta near the intersection of St. Charles County, Warren County and Franklin County.

History

The area around the present day city of Augusta was founded in 1836 by Leonard Harold, a follower of Daniel Boone, as a riverboat landing along the Missouri. The town was originally named Mount Pleasant with the riverboat landing known as Augusta Bend. In 1855, the town was incorporated as the city of Augusta. In 1859, Georg and Friedrich Muench founded one of the earliest wineries in the area, Mount Pleasant Winery. Flooding in the Missouri River valley caused the river to change course in 1872, drying up the area's riverboat landing and leaving a distinct soil type in the area between the town and the river. The area's early vineyards were planted in the 1880s and the area began receiving recognition for the distinctive flavors and profile of the wine being produced there. In the later parts of the 19th and early 20th century, the production volume from the area helped the Missouri wine industry compete with Ohio for market share east of the Rocky Mountains. The advent of Prohibition had a dramatic effect on the area causing the closure of local wineries and the uprooting of vineyards. A revival period occurred in the 1960s that lead to the founding of many of the area's current wineries.
